Green Community and Open Space Task Force

Earth Day is behind us, but in Somerville, sustainability is a year-round quest.
We wanted to call your attention to an article in Friday’s Somerville Journal about the proposed creation of a Green Community and Open Space Task Force, announced at the April 22 Board of Aldermen meeting by Aldermen Rebekah Gewirtz (Ward 6) and Maryann Heuston (Ward 2).
Quoting from the story: “The task force is designed to bring together community members, the Board of Aldermen, city staff and local experts to discuss ways to increase Somerville’s open spaces, reduce storm water runoff, and provide incentives for residents and businesses to make improvements that will reduce the city’s impact on the environment. In addition, Heuston and Gewirtz are requesting that the city institute a voluntary composting program, which would save taxpayers money and decrease Somerville’s carbon footprint.”
Their proposal dovetails nicely with two of the city’s upcoming green events:
- The B2Green Expo, May 6 at 4pm at the Holiday Inn (30 Washington St). It’s a 60-minute session on “greening” your business, followed by two hours of networking with other green (and green-aspiring) business owners. For more info, contact the Chamber of Commerce, GoGreen Somerville or the city’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment.
- The 3rd annual Greening the City Gala, a benefit for Groundwork Somerville which takes place on Saturday, May 8 at Arts at the Armory (191 Highland Ave).
