Winner: Jason Chase

Jason Chase’s winning entry was randomly drawn from the group of correct answers we received.

He knew that the photograph of the “furniture” painting came from a switchbox in Davis Square’s main concourse, at the corner of College Ave and Holland St.

How did he know? As it happens, Jason is a Somerville artist (jasonchase.com). Back in 2006, he painted the popcorn box that’s right next to the switchbox in the contest.

Jason painted the popcorn box as his community benefit project, after winning a grant from the Somerville Arts Council. “I spent many days down there, back in 2006,” he recalls.

When he saw the photograph of the furniture painting in the Spring, 2010 edition of Somerville Scout, he thought it looked familiar. “But I still went down there just to double-check,” he says. He had not been down in Davis Square since Honk! Fest in October.

For the second consecutive issue, our “Scout This” winner plans to spend his $50 prize at Highland Kitchen (150 Highland Ave). Already a regular – he lives in the vicinity – Jason says he intends to use his money mainly on “drinks made by Joe” – Old Fashioned cocktails in particular. We’re already raising our glass to you, Jason!
