Spring 2010 Editor’s Note

In March, baseball returns to the Boston area’s bloodstream.

Yet football fever persists – and not just for diehards of the NFL draft. The Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) plays all spring long. One of its best squads – the Boston Militia, fresh off a 9-1 campaign – calls Somerville’s Dilboy Stadium (110 Alewife Brook Pkwy) home.

The team has other Somerville ties as well. Linebacker Sharyn Wacht teaches at Somerville High School. Linebacker/running back Kim Hickey attended SHS. The team also held offseason workouts at the SHS gym.

One Team, One Dream: The Militia Take Aim at the IWFL Title

What happens to a dream deferred? The poet Langston Hughes famously asked if it dries up like a raisin in the sun.

For the Boston Militia – the women’s tackle football team whose home is Somerville’s Dilboy Stadium (110 Alewife Brook Pkwy) – the dream dried up July 11.

Playing at Dilboy in the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) semifinal vs. the D.C. Divas, the Militia seized a 21-19 lead late in the fourth quarter on a 33-yard touchdown scramble from quarterback Allison Cahill. What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based on the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system (especially the spine, and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body).

Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body’s inability to adapt to its environment. It looks to address these diseases not by the use of drugs and chemicals but by locating and adjusting a musculoskeletal area of the body that is functioning improperly.

Stop Kiss

Diana Son’s Stop Kiss, featuring three Somerville actors, runs April 8–18 at The Factory Theatre (791 Tremont St) in Boston. A story of identity and bigotry, Stop Kiss is also about a friendship between two young women that unexpectedly blossoms into romance.

Their first meeting is ordinary enough: chitchat about work, music and boyfriends. Over the course of the play, their friendship deepens, each woman bringing out strength, courage and tenderness in the other.

The three Somerville actors are Lisa Miguel Smith (as Sara), Tom Giordano (as Peter) and Somerville Scout publisher Holli Banks (as Mrs. Winsley/Nurse).
