Theatre@First presents Dracula

On Friday, Feb. 19 at 8 pm, Theatre@First will host Dracula at the Elizabeth Peabody House (277 Broadway).

Sourced from the 1897 classic by Bram Stoker, this production uses John Mattera’s adaptation from 1980.

Theatre@First has operated in the Somerville area for six years (view a list of their past shows here). They’ve performed at The First Congregational Church, The Unity Church of God and The Somerville Theatre.

“I wanted to use EPH for Dracula in large part due to their stage,” wrote Chris DeKalb, the play’s producer and Somerville resident, in an email. “It’s a multi-level space that lends itself well to the dark and gothic look I wanted for the show.”

He continues: “The version of Dracula that we’re doing is a dramatic version of the story and I wanted a space that would reflect that classic view well.” DeKalb also notes that “the staff has been very welcoming and responsive to our requests.”

So far, the plays have been drawing heavy audiences from Somerville, as well as Medford, Cambridge and Arlington. “Typically, our shows attract around 500 people,” wrote DeKalb. “We expect to have around this number attend Dracula as well.”

He adds that a “significant portion of the cast” lives in Somerville, and concludes with a question: “You know we have Tom Champion in the play? He’s playing Dr. Seward.”
